Shlomo Bistritzky (centre) with Chief Rabbi Jona Metzger (l.) and Rabbi Mosche Kotiarsky (r.), chief of the Chabbad Rabbis showing the letter of appointment.
It was a historical moment. On January 16th, the only 34 years old Shlomo Bistritzky was appointed Rabbi of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. A ceremony in the synagogue in Hohe Weide took place in front of about 70 rabbis from all over the world and about 330 guests of the Jewish community. Shlomo Bistritzki was born in Israel, studied in Manchester, New York and Berlin and moved to Hamburg in 2003. Here, he founded the Chabad Lubawitsch Society e.V. caring for elderly and ill members of the community and gave new impulses to the communal life of the Jewry in Hamburg together with his wife Chani, who is teaching Hebrew and religion at the Talmund Tora School, where his grandfather Loeb went to school before he had to flee the Nazis. In order to attend the inauguration of his grandchild, the 80 years old Loeb Bistritzky travelled from Israel to Hamburg for the second time since 2006.
