The University Players present William Shakespeare's Richard III Shakespeare’s history play introduces us to an ambitious aristocratic man who is willing to stop at nothing in order to achieve power. From our modern point of view he is not as much physically handicapped as mentally deranged. Our version of “Richard III” is set in the world of high finance, and invites the audience to take a look at the management in leading “locust” companies and hedge funds. Obviously Richard himself does not murder people; he would never get his hands dirty. Richard does not care about the legal system, as he is not a part of it, and sustains his power simply by being faster, more unethical and more ruthless than his rivals in the global business. But even the people Richard competes with, outwits and gets out of his way are no popular role models. Richmond - who kills Richard in the end – has not only learnt how to gain power but how to maintain it through coalition and responsible behaviour. |
