Last
week I told you about the web as a place for lonely city dwellers to meet new
persons, well, after this week I can say it has also another function – to calm
down and console people. Somehow for the majority of people it is now much
easier to talk via the web about their feelings and give details price they
never would have thought of doing so in real life – yet talking to an almost
stranger seems to be far easier for them than to their closest friends. A fact
which amazes me. One the other hand I have to admit that leading a conversation
via the web it is much easier to get to the topic of what you are interested
in. With a bit of practice there is hardly a detail you won’t get out of your
chat partner. It is a bit frightening actually. Also frightening is the idea
that people you know only from the web or maybe just were glancing at your
profile stand in front of you and think you knew them or that they know you.
Most astonishing is it if it turns out to be your bus driver. At moments like
this you realise that Hamburg is a small town some
times.

***

Now, last
week I recommended you a place where to go, this week I will give you an advice
where not to go to. If you really love this city and are happy with the people
who live here then you shouldn’t turn up the Landungsbrücken this Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. The 820th anniversary of the harbor will take
place then. The only problem is it is mostly filled with tourists who have no
idea where they are going to, who hinder an otherwise well-functioning public
transport system and are ready to spend insane prices for a simple sausage.

Instead
you should go to the service in the Michel that will be held Friday afternoon,
then join the march to the Landungsbrücken to see the arrival of the ships –
after that the entire harbor area should be avoided for the rest of the
weekend. Enjoy the days instead at the Alster where there will be hardly any
people and marvel at the wonder of this little paradise at the heart of the
city.

***

Speaking
of web, public transport and personal details – is it just me or do you find people
who reveal each and everything about their personal circumstances on the mobile
annoying too? Thanks to a train journey last week we now know that Andy’s
girlfriend is pregnant while Maria is single again oh yes and that the mother
of the woman who spoke in the mobile hates her. Where were those earplugs once
again?

It’s time
to bring you closer to a location where you can have fun, meet interesting
people and do something for your cultural understanding. The Molotow bar at the
Reeperbahn is such a location and every last Tuesday in a month it belongs to
new poets, hopeful storytellers or just people that are out of their mind
because then it’s time for Poetry Slam. On a Poetry Slam you can read your own
poem, story or just interesting thoughts about the world for 5 minutes – the
audience then decides whether you may to continue if you haven’t finished yet
or not. If it doesn’t take longer than 5 minutes then the Jury comes
immediately and rates your show from 0 to 10. Winner is the one with the most
points. On a usual evening there will be about 10 poets but it even can stretch
to 16 or more. It always starts at 8pm and is mostly finished by midnight. Be
warned since the club is quite small and many people are in there it will get
hot very quickly but it’s definitely worth it. So far I missed some people who
dare it to express their thoughts in English or other languages – maybe you are
brave enough? The Molotow bar is located directly next to the Tui
Operettenhaus. Entrance is 3,50 Euros if you are participating it’s free. Early
queuing is recommended.

It’s
astonishing to see how quickly this city changes – hardly that there is the sun
out and we can dare to enter the streets without the fear of getting wet the
whole attitude of people changes. They seem much more relaxed and happy – enjoy
the weather and it’s like a magical spring atmosphere. It’s really worth to go
to discover this city now – Alster and Planten & Bloomen are in full blossom
and just look magnificent and these warm nights with the smell of spring in the
air is like a little paradise – and that in a big city – who needs country
life?

* * *

News
about my little online project: So far I chatted mostly to my friends who I
already know and learned that the way you express yourself online is different
compared to the way you speak offline. But I met a new person – a British expat
who was quite glad to have found new friends in such a short time after
uploading his profile – maybe the web isn’t such a bad place to meet new people
after all? More about this next week.

City
life is quite interesting. You have approximately two million people in this
city yet it is hard to meet someone as they are all addicted to their web-profiles.
There they can talk and meet people - a fact that still astonishes me - in
particular when you know the people in real life. You think they are shy and
introverted but online they reveal anything about them. Still the old-fashioned
guy who prefers to meet people in real life and enjoy when they talk to you
with their voice instead of the keyboard I thought I would never set up such a
profile – yet if you are the only one who hasn’t one it’s quite hard to resist
the trend. So out of curiosity
(or desperation) I set
up one profile myself. It's not the lack of friends – it’s just trying to fathom this
ridiculous trend. So what is the result of the first 24 hours – well, I chatted
to friends I already knew for a long time and realized that there is a whole
new style of expression online. It’s shorter it’s full with strange symbols and
abbreviations you hardly understand. It’s like learning a new language. Then
you get insulted from people you have seen one or two times but don’t really
know – it seems the web is the perfect place for cowards who do not have the
courage to face people in real life and then say their opinion.

All
this is quite macabre – I mean I understand that the web can be the perfect
platform for people in villages to connect with each other and meet people –
but this is a world famous city – so wake up and look around you – you will see
other people and with a smile, friendliness and honesty it is not necessary to
lock yourself in your room and wait that the “You’ve got Mail’ message pops up.
It is ridiculous to see that sometimes in Internet cafés two people who sit
next to each other peruse the same website. I often think if one would only now
look to the right and the other one to the left – it all could be that easy. So
turn down the computer now – stand up, go outside and be open about the things
that may come, especially if you come from abroad. You will be amazed how many
people like you are in this city. Watch this place to find out more about
locations where to go to have a good time and meet some new and interesting
people. For now I give the internet one more chance – maybe I was wrong about
it? Might be interesting to see what will happen next.

Out with the old and in with the new

Previously
this blog dealt with the beauty of Hamburg, now it is time to go a step further
and take a look at the city life.
Hamburg is a city with the most interesting mix of people and locations
– I will try to bring you some of them closer. Whether there are interesting
bars or clubs or just nice places to relax and meet people and I will try to
decipher the code of city life. For example why it is that people reveal every-
and anything about them on the web but can’t be bothered to have a conversation
with more than three words in real life. All this is done in the style of a
good old-fashioned column rather than a blog. And as columnists tend to do from
time to time some things might not have happened the way it is written here.

So
welcome to the new blog: Lif(v)e in Hamburg.

Blue Hour

Driving around Hamburg by night is quite an experience. You pass by the harbour, cross the Kohlbrandbrücke to get rewarded with a spectacular view over the city. It all seems so strange, like a place where you are only a visitor or even that this place doesn't belong to your hometown at all - but then you see Hamburgs landmark and you are astonished how magical the city can appear. And as you drive on the magic thing happens - the dark of the night is making way for an early grey only to be transformed into a beautiful blue - The Blue Hour the hour before sun rises again and day life returns to the streets and the night life crowd is heading home. And as you open the door of your flat in beautiful sunshine you pitty the people who never see this side of Hamburg.

We have to remember this March 17, it was the first day were you really felt that spring is upon us. It was just beautiful to lounge in the sun while reading the newspaper. No other city transforms so suddenly when the sun is out. People are happier and the whole city just glows and appears totally different. And what to do when you have the afternoon off and the sun is shining? Going into a dark cinema of course. Unfortunately today was the only day to catch up with the latest 3D technology to a reasonable price. Works great. But there is nothing so beautiful as when you come out of the dark and see a city in full light. While it lasts I recommend to all of you to walk along the Alster - then you know why Hamburg carries the label "most beautiful city in the world".

Under Construction

Why do I have the feeling that with each day that passes Hamburg resembles more and more a gigantic construction site? We are used to the biggest construction site of Europe which is the "HafenCity" project but also the construction works on various shopping centres, rapid transit lines, cinemas and on top the A7 and the "StadtBahn" (City train) make you think how long one can endure it. You hardly can get through the city without redirections or replacement busses and if you want to shop you have to live with dust and noise as the oldest shopping centres are getting a make-over for the 21st century. The most horrible thing though is the construction work at the Jungerfernstieg. Not before 2011 can we enjoy the beautiful summer months at that place. Hamburg is still the most beautiful city in the world and to remain it it has to do something but as a resident you really have to have strong nerves to endure all the projects.

Hamburg was never short of people who are able to spend a few quids more than the ordinary shopper but last Saturday's event was quite stunning to witness. Standing in line at the world's biggest electronic market at the check-out I was amazed that in these dire times a man is able to spend more than 1000 Euros on DVDs. Each family member had a few dozen and the poor (or better rich) man kept the money rolling. With costumers like this we don't have to fear the decline in the markets. Now, would they all come to this city to spend their money? Please!
