In last week's review I complained that American movies always have happy endings. REC, a horror flick, is an exception, maybe because it was directed by two Spaniards. The title comes from the blinking text showing that a camera is recording. The plot involves a local news station camera crew as they follow the adventures of a firehouse full of rowdy Los Angeles firefighters as they respond to an emergency call at 1.47 A.M. This fright flick starts without credits and mood music. The only foreshadowing of the horrors to come is that one of the firefighters explains to the anchor woman that 85% of the calls are not about fires but health emergencies.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People is a romantic comedy combining aspects of the films The Devil Wears Prada and Borat. The hero this time is a Brit who is not from Kazakhstan and therefore does not bring up the subject of fecal matter. But he does show up for a job interview at New York City's leading style magazine, Sharps, wearing a red t- shirt stating "Young, dumb and full of come." Miracle of miracles, the dork is hired and he proceeds to proposition every female model standing by the water cooler to the point that he is warned about sexual harrassment.
