In May 2008, the EU commission started the campaign for the “European Green Capital” – a competition which is meant to encourage European cities to reach new levels of environmental protection. At the start, the field consisted of 35 competitors. After the pre-selection in the first stage, Hamburg is now among the top eight candidates for the title.
