Hamburg Celebrates Party on Ice

Although the Hamburg Authority of the Environment warned of the ongoing freezing of Alster Lake, about 75,000 people came to enjoy the winter wonderland with a surface as big as 180 football fields. They came with sleds, skates, buggies, picnic baskets and dogs and warmed up with bratwurst and hot wine punch which was offered on the banks of the Alster. The fire department, the police and the Red Cross were prepared to intervene. Fortunately, they counted only 20 slightly injured people.
