Since the Außenwirtschaftgesetz (AWG), or foreign business law, was revised last year there is a real danger that a protectionist government will misuse it to protect local industry and jobs. Added to this, the emotionally-charged debate surrounding the security of Hamburg´s traditional shipping business, Hapag-Lloyd, shows what effect public pressure can have on politicians and their eagerness to invoke the AWG.
